Great advice Joslyn! As a service professional we dont recommend a novice does this simply because we're setup to get in and out, and do it right, but if they choose to, I think you made some strong points - its all about safety and not making it worse.

BTW - this site is a great resource! Keep up the good work!

I had a mold removed from my home in 2007. The entire service...from testing, to removing the mold covered drywall, carpet, etc, to spraying and having a drain installed on the inside perimeter of my basement came to $13,500. Am I correct to understand that if I were a business....or had a home office....with a mold remediation bill, that I could deduct this from my taxes....but since I am a homeowner, my child's health does not count as much as an employee's. I was told by the IRS that I may not deduct this as a medical expense...even as a *preventative* medical expense without a doctor's note which claims that my child already has a health condition which made this repair necessary...and that I may not claim this as a casualty loss because it was not due to a sudden catastrophic event. Has anyone had any success with claiming this expense on their taxes....and is anything being done to change the tax law to make the health of ordinary citizens as important as those who own businesses?
