Mold and mildew are two unwanted guests always lurking around our homes during humid, hot summers or even during other seasons, depending on the conditions inside our homes. You could find them in the most unexpected of places if you’re not careful. They could be really detrimental to your health if you have any allergies or even without them. You can use dehumidifiers to counteract the growth of mold, however you will still need to remove the hotspots where they tend to gather. This can be done in the usual way by using traditional harsh chemicals such as bleach or by using a different set of cleaners.
The following solutions are aimed toward a more green alternative than what you would commonly use. You would be surprised that these are three simple ingredients you may find without too much effort: vinegar, tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extract. While the latter two might be a little harder to find in some countries and locations, you could easily work with only vinegar and still eliminate a lot of the molds seen around our homes. Tea tree oil can be expensive, but it has a very wide variety of fungi that could be eliminated with its use. It also has a strong smell that takes time to dissipate, sometimes even days. Grapefruit seed extract on the other hand has no discernible scent and also works great against mold and mildew.
Using Tea Tree Oil
When you’re dealing with mold there are few things as effective as tea tree oil. You can use it with great success on mold from leaking ceilings or even in the bathroom. You should keep in mind that you only need to use a little bit of it to get things done. Its strong smell will eventually disappear after a few days and the mold you’re trying to eliminate will be completely gone. Use two teaspoons of tea tree oil mixed with about two cups of water and use that to spay the areas covered with mold. The results should be easy to see eventually once the mixture has a chance to work.
Using Grapefruit Seed Extract
The great thing about using this particular option is the fact that it is nearly entirely odorless and clear, allowing you to remove mold with minimum fuss. All you need to do to get things started is to combine about 20 drops of the extract with two cups of water, then place that in a spray bottle. The resulting mix can be used indiscriminately against all your mold problems around the house without worrying about toxicity and unpleasant smells.
Using Vinegar
Using straight, pure vinegar will destroy about 82 percent of all common mold varieties on a nonporous surface. You should use distilled white vinegar from a spray bottle while spraying the molded area. Avoid rinsing it and let it do its magic. The mold will die off on its own in most cases and the smell of vinegar will disappear after a few short hours.
