The Effects of Mold on Pregnancy
Question:
We live a house built in the 80’s. I am pregnant, so it’s harder to ignore the smell of mold. I am worried that this will be potentially harmful to my family. Would I be wasting my time with household test kits? Should I call someone to come asap?
Thanks!
Answer: Avoid mold like the plague while pregnant!
Since not many women have volunteered to be exposed to high levels of mold while they’re pregnant, scientifically accurate data is hard to come by. However, we know that mold can be damaging to your health, and it’s best to get as far away from the mold issue as possible while you are pregnant.
Mold is never good to breathe and can cause harmful side effects to the mother and the rest of the family living in the home. Many women have reported birth defects and miscarriage in their unborn child after having severe exposure to mold during their pregnancy.
Whether there is a definite relationship between mold and these problems, there is no conclusive answer. To be safe though, definitely get away from the mold altogether, or have a reputable professional come and deal with the problem. Using a household test kit can be a good first step in determining the presence or absence of dangerous mold.
Do not as a pregnant woman, attempt to remove the mold yourself. The less exposure you have, the better.
