How can the Government Help with Mold Contamination?

When it comes to dealing with the problem of household mold, you may want to consider how the government can help you. The government offers several different resources to individuals who want to learn more about mold and how to prevent and treat it. Some of those resources include:

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

This website by the EPA offers individuals a host of information regarding household mold. It includes sections on health, cleaning, and mold removal in schools. This is a great starting point for the individual who is interested in learning more about mold and what they can do about it.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency

This website by FEMA offers important information that helps individuals understand the risks associated with mold and also health conditions that can result from mold exposure.

FEMA has extensive experience in dealing with natural disasters and the aftermath, which includes hurricanes.

There is a very high risk of mold developing after a hurricane and FEMA has several news releases on their website that detail steps that can be taken by anyone facing this.

The Center for Disease Control

The CDC has an entire section on their website devoted to mold and how it affects individuals. There are articles dealing with how mold develops as well as methods used to remove mold.

The CDC strongly stresses on their website the importance of careful handling when it comes to mold removal.

The information on their website is available in either English or Spanish.

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease

NIAID has a website that addresses many of the issues that those with allergies face.

Use These Mold Resources

Mold can be a strong irritant to those who suffer with allergies and this website provides information on dealing with that as well as asthma. This is a wonderful resource for parents, as well as those who have children who are prone to allergy attacks.

Discovering that you have mold in your home can be devastating. It is important to have free and accessible resources available to you so that you can begin to understand the issue and how to effectively deal with it.

All of the websites listed above have contact information supplied and you can find that once you visit them.

Some also have a list of frequently asked questions which can give you some insight into how mold develops and the steps needed to remove it. By visiting these websites, you will be arming yourself with the much-needed knowledge you need to conquer the mold problem that you have. Knowledge is always the first step in defense so peruse the sites and absorb all the information you can.

It is also wise to read the information even if you don’t have a mold problem because you may discover something that will help you prevent it so it never happens to you and your family.

What is the best source of mold data for the US by region? Are there any sources which give historical mold counts for various regions. I must move from relatively mold-free Boulder CO to a lower altitude and would like to have information to guide my choice. Thank you.

i was watching that home make over show recently, and they said that men are more likely to get really sick from moldy houses? is this true? I have a friend who's husband has been sick A LOT, and it sounds a lot like it might be from mold in their air ducts or something. but she is pregnant, and they have a baby, and they have not been as sick as often as the husband, which is why i was wondering if that was true, that men are more at risk? thanks. kylie
Joslyn January 9, 2008 - 8:23 pm
Kylie - Thank you for your question! With all the research I have done, that is the first time I've heard that men are more at risk when dealing with mold. Ironically, it is pregnant women who are generally more at risk as well as the baby within her womb. Some people are more at risk to mold conditions than others but I don't believe it has anything to do with gender. Here are some articles I would advise you to read for more information on the subject: Does Mold Affect Pregnancy? Dangerous Mold: Who is at Risk? Symptoms of Mold Exposure and Who is at Risk As far as answering your question though regarding men vs women, I have not yet found anything that advocates for it. If you hear anything else on the subject though I would be interested in hearing more =) Thank you Kylie and if anyone else has anything to add please comment! Joslyn from the MoldBlogger Team

I just had black mold removed from my house yesterday. I am a low-income, 60 year old who does qualify for Low Income Energy Assistance. Do you know of any government assistance program that would help me pay for the mold removal and treatment? FEMA pays only if the mold was caused by a disaster.

I was employed for 41 years before finding myself on the lines of unemployment.Thats not the primary problem, because I will be back out into the work force as soon as another job that allows me to pay my mortgage and bills finds me or I find it.My problem is my house is in need of repairs that I cannot afford, especially the mold that is the result of a leaking pipe I could afford to fix.I have since sacrificed food and and other needs to fix this pipe. However,i cannot afford the mold clean up and I have had to go to the local hospital for treatment of respiratory related illnesses 3 time in 5 months (I'm sure) caused by the growth of the mold spores in the air in my home. I have Lupus and I am dying a slow death because of this mold in my down stairs bathroom, are ther any resourse I can take advantage of until I am back on my feet,i have no where else to turn to s I deal with health issues every 2 months related to this dilemma!!

We are senior citizens, 67 and 72, with two adult disabled kids and a disabled son in law to support. We bought this house , thinking at least we had a home. Leaks under the house, abd the plumber wont repair. Now, our walls are covered with mold, bathroom is nearly gone to m o ld, and the water continues to spray. We have respiratory illnesses, bad allergies, and dont know what we are going to do. We are desperately trying to find a h one, and dont know how we will afford it.

I have discovered mold in my house and garage. Apparently, it was painted over just before I bought and moved into this house, in 2013. Now that time has passed, the mold is showing it's ugly face...accompanied by mushrooms and cracks in the paint and wall. I'd like to find out if it's black mold and who's responsible for it if it is... I did have an inspection prior to moving in. I am broke and cannot afford to pay for a mold inspection. Is there help for those with limited income, on disability?

I am 61 yrs. old, am on a fixed income, and my house was flooded during the Memorial Day flood in Houston, TX. I need a company to come in and treat for mold for free. I just read above that FEMA pays if mold was caused by a disaster, which this was, However, when i spoke with FEMA yesterday, they told me they do not offer assistance with mold treatment. PLEASE help me. I have asthma and being put up in a hotel by Catholic charities who told me they treat for mold free, but i am now being told differently. I don't know how much longer they will allow me to stay here, so i need immediate assistance. Thank you.

Deafening silence on all the desperate questions about government assistance. I guess this means there isn't any. I suppose we all need to write our Congressional reps about this.

My wife and Ibown a home that now has black mold. This was caused from a negligent contractor who installed the roof wrong causing chronic leaks. The roof continues to leak and the mold is getting worse. Who can we turn to as we don't have the money to fix all the problems this has caused. The legal process has failed so far. We need help. Thanks! Jamie Moore

 http://docplayer.net/2380650-Directory-of-western-new-york-housing-services.html
?Above link is for Western New York, but if you scroll to the bottom of the site there are many links to other states that have different aids for financial help. I'm looking for mold removal help sources for a friend of mine. I wanted to share what I found so far. I hope this helps some people. It's sad the Government hadn't replied. The mold is worse than lead paint but it seems there is more assistance for lead paint removal, of which I feel should be a big concern, but mold even bigger. From my own experience I have found that Lysol spray tends to be some of the cheaper way to get rid of small amounts mold. Good luck everyone!

Something else I found Department of Housing and Urban Development The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides block grants for Native Americans whose homes need to have mold removed. The block grants funds Indian tribes registered with the government and designated housing entities. The funds provided focus on construction, rehabilitation, and will focus on employing the low-income or unemployed individuals to complete the work. More grant info here.... http://www.ehow.com/list_5899469_government-grants-homeowners-mold.html

Hello my name is Kendall And I'm 50 and my husband is 55. 4 years ago we had to walk away from everything we owned down to a coffee cup , to over a hundred year old album on my mothers side of the family. The pics were so old they were made of metal . My husband collapse on a business trip and spent 5 days in icu needing 5 blood transfusions . It's been three years and I have a horrible fungal infection my ears bleed a lot. He was diagnosed with lymphoma and far and few infectious disease dr. Or any dr. For that matter knows what they r doing. My advice to all of you who are continuing to stay in their house while nothing gets done is to get OUT NO MATTER WHAT! It's not worth your life . Educate yourself with the laws. Landlord tenet laws . Home owners bad faith laws. Go through the steps and save all documents and receipts letters emails anything let your landlord know . And call your local health dept. it can be annonoumus . Also be your own advocate with your dr. Tell them what u think is going on and the testing you need to prove it. They will 90% of the time do it or refer you to someone who can . The law states that your land lord must put u up in another place within 3 days.... If they don't you go to wherever church's housing vouchers from hud for emergency hotels. Immediately take video I phone is fine pictures , and pull up a demand letter template on the web. If you have family ask them to do it. If your older.... There are advocate gov. Angencys that will help. And keep good records . It is devestating to say the least but none of our belongings matter if your dead. Also my God or higher power or whatever it is u have faith in will guide you to the people u need . I will put up some website that help. I now am in lidigation with about 50 entity's after speaking with 30 lawyers and hours of bull ----! Do not give up. When I finish my trial I'm going to start a charity that helps us financially . God Bles to u all!! U can do this .

Please, someone help! I need to know if there a any resources for single mothers who are currently living in a mold infested trailer home. Her, and both the boys are sick, Ages only 5, and 6. She needs a new, different place to live in. Her trailer home is killing her. I think I may possibly have her talked in to moving in with me. But of course this would only be a short term fix, as I have MS and am on a fixed income. She has no medical insurance for herself, the children have Medicare. Please, if you know of any help I would be forever grateful. May God bless!

I am sick from mold and still living in toxic mold. It's been a crazy, horrible journey. We were turned down by insurance company, called crazy when I got sick even though I keep getting new diagnoses and illnesses that are not normal for a previously healthy person and from m ti research, all consistent to toxic mold exposure. I have contacted every agency listed and noone seems to care. I have tests for this home and my allergy and black mold test show I have it in my body and I allergic to the exact same mold tested positive in my home. I am on Disability since and I was taking care of my dad, he passed away in June and I've cleaned, treated and continue to have health issues, no help and not enough money to get out, get all the medical attention by a Dr that knows mold. Just spent $6000 for my dogs as one seems to be allergic like me. I have such severe reactions and other reactions that I dont know what to do. I have photos of my house, the mold and it's all falling apart. I have nuerological damage and am unable to get this done. My daily life is in this house because I don't feel good. I dont know what to do. I'm trying to get a loan through USDA program but I have no printer, and my mind shuts off quickly. I'm overwhelmed and I want out. I want to live. Is there anybody who really cares. Why is this mold stuff still so controversial? It's very real.
