I just found out that my house has mold. My floor and floor joistes are rotted from the mold. I had a pipe leak under my deck which was hidden and we did not know that it was leaking. I have mold coverage on my insurance policy. Call the insurance and they sent out an agent. He would not go under the house to check the joistes or anything .

He just walked round the house and took pictures. Well, bad news, he said they would not pay because of something I did not understand. I don’t know why i have been paying for mold coverage if they won’t pay for!

Our Unbelievable Journey with Biotoxin Poisoning from Black Mold.

July 27, 2007 our daughter Alixandrea was born; she is everything we’d hoped for, she is perfect. No complications. Life was perfect. Our credit is getting better, we have a new car, my husbands job of 4 years is moving along, my almost 13 year old son Dakota is settling in with all his friends. We couldn’t ask for anything more.

When she was 6 months old we decided we needed a bigger place, so we moved into this home with a basement and lots of land.
What we thought to be a perfect find; a little house of our own, in the same town.

Only later to find out how badly our nightmares would also come true.

Feb. 09, 2008 we moved into this house on Stolle Road in Dupo, IL. The weather was wet, icy, and freezing. My husband of 7 years who has only been sick maybe twice fell very ill, and stayed ill for about two and a half weeks. Our family doctor diagnosed him with allergies.

On the second week of living in the Stolle house I started to lose my voice ; I get sick maybe once a year, so I waited to see if I’d get any better.

Now on the third week of being here my son started losing his toenails, his hair was changing to white or gray like; he’s having stomach pains and feelings of sickness all over. He’s had constipation in the past, and was barefoot all the time; so again we thought nothing of it, but decided to make him an appointment anyway…… It was on the third week that my voice was now moving into barely a whisper, so I’m going to the family doctor and I’m taking Alixandrea with me; she had eczema. He gave me some steroids for my throat and told me too; that it was allergies.

Well it was that day I feared that our new baby was bound to pick up what we had all gotten, so against our family doctors advice twice now. I let him vaccinate her, with the warning that these vaccinations are causing autism; while not understanding fully what autism really was.

Later to regret that as well, now if your just asking Alixandrea Hagan’s parents their opinion on vaccinations; we’d feel that the shot’s broke down her immune-system, and she falls deadly ill from black mold. It was then, that we noticed the devastating changes in all three main systems of her body.

The forth week I was right Alixandrea did fall ill, but her illness was different; it shook our souls, it was like nothing any of us had ever seen. First it was in the sinuses then that night her cough was worse than a long time smokers. I called the doctor again….. He said allergies; gave her some cough syrup. We were also noticing our skin around our nails turning white and ashy we looked dead.

On the fifth week she was getting worse; she went back to the doctor. He said he was unsure so he gave more syrup.

For the next two weeks we watched as our perfect baby kept getting sicker and sicker, so I called the landlord to come check the home to see if there would be anything in the home that could be the cause of our new illnesses. He came said nope wasn’t the house. Even though one could visibly see black mold. I trusted him. He was our previous landlord. So he wasn’t a stranger.

We didn’t know anything about mold, especially black mold!

Now, on the seventh week of living in the house; Alixandrea was as sick as I could bear to see. I took her back to the doctor. I had mentioned mold, lead, something, anything to him; that would be the cause of her illness so that we could fix it. He, like some of the other doctor’s, that we’ve come to know, said I don’t know anything about mold lets run some blood work.

Well fine, just not good enough though. I was 100% sure that what ever it was, it was in the house. (Because I was scared that Alixandrea was gonna catch something from a person; her and I never left that house the whole time we lived there.) My hubby did all the shopping ……

When we got home from the doctor’s office I told my husband who was about to leave for work that we’d be in a hotel when he got home, for him to join us. He wasn’t happy, we just moved in!

That was Friday March 28, 2008. I had to see for myself if it was our new home of eighty years old, that’s sits across from a levee right on it’s owners property– Falling Spring Rock Quarries. This is why we kept the windows closed too, because of all the dust.

Monday April 1, 2008 we called the landlord again told him we were in a hotel that he needed to bring a professional, in front of us, to prove the houses innocence. So we all meet at the house. The landlords professional Rick Ortiz said the mold WAS what made us all ill, and was covered up; get rid of what we had taken with us, and to leave everything we own. After hearing that I wanted to know what my family had really been breathing so I payed my own professional. (THANK GOD)

There’s over 50,000 toxic spores; not to mention the 60% asbestos they found my son playing in. Yes enough toxic mold to cause permanent damage.

So………… let Hell begin. Now one might say we weren’t there long enough to even get sick; let alone to be permanently be effected by the mold. The proof is in the pudding. Now we’re praying that the asbestos wont affect us especially our son and daughter.

I have become highly educated through out this journey …… We have been through some things; things that I wouldn’t wish on anyone, but this is by far the hardest thing I’ve been through and I’ve been through a hell of a lot of trauma.

Mold is expensive. That’s why home owners and landlords are so stealthy. Insurance companies wont cover it!!!!

Finding a home were we’d like at our price range with our credit now, with no water damage is virtually impossible. Still trying to be optimistic.

Now Sunday, August 21, 2011. It’s been almost 3 1/2 years and my family is still living inn optimistic hell due to water damaged buildings (S.B.S.) sick building syndrome. We’re so sensitive to mold that now, less than 50 spores will make us ill—-

It starts with the sneezing and sore throat then following that is mostly flu like symptoms, stomach pains, then vomiting, our hair smelled like wet dog, we were clammy, dry skin, we felt a closed in feeling, not wanting to leave; like being hypnotized; gums around my teeth was loose, twitching, cold sweats. Alixandrea’s ears smelled bad, her body would go limp; and she’d become very pale, and her cheeks would be rash red; hardly ever did her nose run, however her ears had yellow; green; and dark brown slime oozing all the time. Our joints would throb and always be in pain. Guts hurt. Still to this day I have phantom like pains that run up and down my leg all day and night. My limbs will go numb. Soft touches hurt. Nose and eyes will burn. Cramps around the rib cage, and in other areas of the body. Skin changed color with a yellowish tint; Dakota had a mole appear on his face that changed from blue to black to brown, we’re unable to concentrate; staying focused wasn’t happening, just brushing and blow drying our hair was now a task, our memory was getting worse, we can taste and smell chemicals in food and water, we react badly to heat, smells and odors in the environment, and we felt high like being on something; dizziness, clumsy, was unable to cough up flem – dry cough. Our bodies were always tense and tight. And my husband had vertigo. These are to name a few……………….

Our cats were showing their own signs of exposure from the mold too. They acted like they were tripping, freaked out and were scared to leave the house. I remember them also being overly hyper too.

Then right as we begin to get well and that comes quickly; when we remove ourselves from the mold, we’d come down with pneumonia like symptoms for about a week. Alixandrea and I would always fall ill in a patteren like way; first week she’d be ill, would always fall one week before my menstrual. Then without failure I’d fall ill the week of my menstrual. Normally we stayed sick for three weeks out of the month.

Anyway…..We stayed in the first set of hotels for about three months. Some of them re-exposed us, so we had to be careful. Coast of a nicer place was now in order. Then we got desperate and moved into a little two bedroom hollow walled apartment, 20 minutes out of our way. This meant up rooting our family in the middle of a school year. Needless to say that worked for 6 months. We were to loud. Then we moved into a bigger place around the corner in November 2008 I CHECKED THIS PLACE OUT REALLY GOOD, I saw NO mold.

However as soon as we’d turn on the heater Alixandrea fell ill again, following her was Dakota and me. It took me 5 months to prove there was mold there making us sick, and it wasn’t much; (duct work) while finding out we’re sensitive to gas now too! There was another kind of symptom when the gas heater was on. Like our noses would run; immediate headaches, and nausea. A new doctor advised, we get out of there too!

A month later we moved across the river. All the while moving to be close to my only family; helping to take care of my dying mother and to take over helping my great aunt Anita care for her son; my mom’s cousin Paul who had Muscular Dystrophy.

Finally finding a trailer with no mold……………… No really, no mold!!! This time we used an ozone machine before we moved in. To make 100% sure!

Alixandrea was pale when we moved in from being ill for so long, and looked like she was on the brink of death. She quickly got well. That was in June, 2009. That whole summer we were all well.

Anyway, that new car of mine. Well apparently we were transporting the mold. Alix was getting sick from my new car now. Alix got sick too when my mom was dying; that was in September 2009. She stayed sick until i got a car rental in March 2010 and took both my kids to see Rich Shoemaker, a doctor who wrote the book on black mold; he diagnosed Dakota and myself with biotoxin poisoning from water damaged buildings. He said he would see Alix when she was old enough.

My mom passed away that September, she was already in bad health with C.O.P.D and worked around asbestos when I was a kid. She was 57 years old and wouldn’t allow an autopsy. I miss her………..

October 2009, following her was her cousin Paul dying from pneumonia. Now the only support and witness I have left to the inside world of our moldy life is my feisty elderly great aunt Anita; Paul’s mom, and my mothers aunt who’s cared for Paul his whole life. I love her……….

Anita, Paul, my mother and I all believe that the mold spores traveled making them all deadly ill from the Stolle house as well. My mother visited me in the Stolle house for two days in a row. Anita was there for an hour. Paul had never stopped by.

Now back to my mold free trailer. Right before Christmas there were drive by shootings in the park where we lived, we found out almost all of our neighbors where doing, dealing, growing, and cooking drugs. Needless to say we didn’t stay long after that.

March 2011, we moved again not far but out of that park. This time in an all concrete duplex. Yes there’s water damage, but at this time we’re being told the mold couldn’t be our problem and just maybe we’ll be okay, after all; it had been almost a year now, and Alix was not showing any sign of being ill. She was also not being subjected to mold at this time.

We were ready to do some catching up with trying to reboot her development, after all she’d been ill and in sever pain for so long. She was only required to concentrate on getting well and staying alive.

The first week we moved in I rushed Alix to her now homeopathic doctor so he could see she was still well. The following week like clock work she’s fallen ill once again. I call Rick Ortiz, asked him to come check this place out. Sure enough now this place has made her sick too. Not to mention we’d be leaving all our belongings again due to re-exposure.

April 2011 here we stand stuck in hotels again…………………………

Today my Alixandrea is now 4 years old, won’t eat any food and has a developmental delay in speech among others, she endured neurological damage from this nightmare, and many other imbalances will follow.

My Dakota is going on 17 years old and is suffering tooth decay, kidney problems, and he too will have many more imbalances to come. I fear for him. I know Alixandrea is bad off, don’t get me wrong, but there is something really wrong with Dakota. We might have all been living in that moldy house, but he was living in the mold.

My husband is now 41 years old and wasn’t in the house as long as us; so he’s not so bad off however, he was the first to get ill, so something got a hold of him.

Myself, 33 years old now, grew up with childhood asthma that hardly ever bothered me. I was burned with 1, 2, 3, and 4th degree burns when I was 4 years old. I am tough old cat with my own set of illnesses now; due to the black mold, like peripheral nerve damage, Sinusitis, fibromyalgia, and skin defects; we’re allergic to gluten now, my kids now have asthma, when they didn’t before. I have O- blood and Dakota has O+ blood and now it’s stagnated.

We’re unable to break down proteins and we have organ problems now. Just to name a few of our current symptoms, and trust me when I say these are only a few of them.

We’ve been to over 20 doctors, 3 three of them scientists; some with me on my fight against mold; some not.

We reside in a hotel now; that has no mold in our room.

Again this is due to another careless, uneducated stealthy landlord/homeowner. We are tired and over whelmed. Still hoping that for what ever reason we’re going through this; lets us move on with life………………

Now, because we’re living outside the materialistic world, with no assistance and are working poor. People stare at us, wondering our situation, too scared or are not yet evolved to understand why we’re living the way we are, and are clueless about (S.B.S) let alone biotoxin poisoning. It makes it extremely hard to fit in. We run into a lot of people with negative vibrations, and are judged by everyone.

To day is Thursday, August 26, 2011. We are still in hotels.

New on Sunday September 4, 2011 I pack up my family and we get out for the day. We went to the Magic House in Kirkwood, Mo. and they too have black mold there in their ventilation system. As soon as I noticed there’s black mold, and you can clearly see it; is about the same time I start have a reaction. I start trembling (shaking), so I go to the manager he tells me their aware of it, but do not think it is as bad as it is.

Now today Tuesday September 6, 2011. Alixandrea’s sick once again from black mold…………..

Questions:

I am watching my children die slowly and am looking for help – is there any help out there?

Rogann in Peoria, IL

I am 49 year-old female. I have been living in my parent’s home for 1 year.

There is obvious (to me) black mold in their finished basement, on the drywall, behind the baseboards, due to repeated episodes of water getting in the foundation, completely soaking the carpet. The color is black and has foul smell. I suspect the carpet is full of mold as well and in the air.

My father passed away 6 months ago, and I am the only sibling that can live with my mother, so moving out is not an option (under any other circumstance, I most certainly would).

My problem is, my brother has power of attorney over our mother, and insists that I am wrong about the mold. That he can “fix” the problem, but has suggested to her that she only needs the carpet cleaned. The carpet is at least 20 years old, and has been wet/dry countless times.

I personally am experiencing chronic coughing and when my grandkids spend the weekend they have constant runny nose/coughing/other symptoms.

My father passed away from lung cancer, but for several years prior to diagnosis, he had a chronic cough that was diagnosed as allergies even though he had NO history of allergies or asthma. When I mentioned it could have been a symptom of mold exposure, it was ignored.

Questions:

I called the local health department and was told the State of IL has “no mold program”, Whatever that means. I was calling to ask about available testing, laws, insurance questions, etc…

I can pay for air quality testing, as I feel that a complete assessment isn’t necessarily needed due to obvious visible signs. Can the carpet be tested as well? I am trying to get this accomplished without my mother knowing, but I’ve ruled out online test kits because I don’t know which ones are trustworthy.

Lastly, is there a medical test I can ask my doctor to perform that proves mold exposure?

Robert in Oceanside, CA

In the beginning of July 2011, we had a downstairs toilet flood. It flooded our livivng room, dining area, and kitchen. We live in a 2 story town home and have an apartment below us. When our flood happened in our down stairs bathroom, it was due to a bad valve in the toilet bowl. It ended up flooding our downstairs and went through our  neighbors roof.

He stated that water was coming thru his roof in the kitchen and living room. Well the leasing office did not fix it right away, they started to work on it Sept 12,2011. I was off that day napping on the couch downstiars and I heard them working on the unit below mine.

Later I had a severe headache, fever, shortness of breathe, no appetite, etc. I thought I had just gotten the flu. I went to my doctor and they said I had strep throat and gave me a breathing treatment for the wheezing and meds to take home with me. I didn’t think anything of it, but then I thought since it took them 2 1/2 months to fix water damage down stairs,  that it might have something to due with it since I felt fine before, only after they started removing the down stairs roof did I become ill.

I had a physical for my work the Thursday prior to this event and there were no problems. My wife is sick too. So I bought a Home Depot mold test and although it’s not growing on my walls or floors, that I can see, the mold test came back positive. So it must be all airborne, and causing our illness. I sent the speciem to the lab to see what kind of mold it is, but I am still waiting for results. I’ve talked to the management office and they just say they were trying to take care of it, but with little to no effort, I told them we were sick and they just say sorry. They wont move us out and we still have 5 months on our lease. All they tell me is if it weren’t safe we would not have you in there, but they have done no mold testing of their own. They just had two guys check for moisture. I had to miss a week of work due to illness and still me and my wife are not feeling well.

Questions:

What can I do while I’m waiting for mold results from the lab? Me and my wife have no money to get a hotel to get us out of the environment and we have no family to stay with. We feel trapped and have no clue what our next step should be? Can we contact an office to help us?

De in Abbeville, Louisiana

My family and I rented a house and upon moving in, the landlord gave us his word he would come and fix the ceiling tiles, but he never did. After the drought we expierienced we had a severe pounding of rain. There was a leak in the ceiling and tiles began to fall. One day I was walking down the hallway and I noticed the ceiling tiles were black, sagging, and there was a thing of mold growing.

I started to have awful headaches, breathing problems, and I had a very severe sinus infection. I had to go to my doctor twice for meds to be changed. My physician was seriously thinking of hospitalyzing me to start an IV. Since we have moved I am still suffering with severe headaches and now our 11 year old daughter has what we believe to be mold in her nose. The nose hurts to the touch and when she blows her nose its black on the tissue. I have looked in her nose and you can see the blackness.

After moving out my now former landlord called and asked why I didn’t tell him of the ceiling. I informed him he knew and never had taken care of his tenants. I also assured him I have pictures at the beginning, middle, and end of this situation because he falsely accused us of tearing down the ceiling tiles out of spite. If you can help please contact ASAP!

Sincerely,

De Primeaux

I recently purchased a mobile home. I noticed a piece of mold on the drywall in the laundry room. I stayed there for a few days then started noticing I was feeling sick. My eyes were dry and irritated. I felt like I couldn’t remember things. The last night I was there I woke up and my nose was bleeding. I haven’t had a nosebleed since I was a kid.

So I got the mold tested, it was stachybotrys (black mold). I plan to have mold remediation done but I’m concerned for my and my families safety. I also have asthma. I don’t know what to do.

Questions:

Is there anything I can do if no one disclosed that it had mold? Does the mold grow back after remediation? I have my stuff there, is it contaminated?

“The Surprise of a New Apartment Renter”

I just moved in an apartment about 3 months ago and when I was viewing it I smelled something weird but I thought that it could be fixed with incense. Now I found out that the smell is mold!

I have 2 small children; a newborn and a toddler that will be 2 this month. The only thing I didn’t want to live with is made possible because I don’t know the smell of mold. I have thrown away many things that have had little rain water on them because of mold. I believe its potato’s growing in the field next to me so I don’t know if it makes it worse. I have tried everything from opening doors to let the air in, using pine sol, to making sure my clothes are dry coming out of the dryer. I have no more solutions. It seems like the apartment is just prone to mold; it wont leave! I need to get rid of it for my health and my childrens. I believe it’s green mold.

Questions:

Would an air purifier help get rid of mold?

Brooke in Independence, MO

Our basement has been leaking for months. I have contacted the property manager about this twice now and they told me that they are not going to fix this since the room is my storage room in the basement. It has panelling and carpet. Two of my children have asthma and when we came and looked at the house before signing the lease I asked the landlord if the basement leaked and she said no.

Then as winter left and the snow started melting the water started coming in. There is a musty smell in the storage room down there and I believe that there is mold growing under the carpet and panelling. I am a single mother and have 4 months left on my lease and I would like to move to another house that is safe for our family and don’t know how to get out of my lease. PLEASE HELP !!!!!!!!!!

Denise in Kissimmee, FL

My name is Denise, I’m 23 years old and have a 7 year old son. We just moved into a two bedroom apartment and have had plenty of water damage to our walls and to our carpet. We have also found mold on the carpet, the walls, window ceils, toilet, etc.

I just recently found out that I’m pregnant and have been having complications. I’m dying to move out of this apartment because my son has asthma and bad allergies. We have both been diagnosed with respiratory infections since moving in and we are always coughing and sneezing and have headaches and stomach pains. I’m not sure if these are signs of being affected by the mold.

I want to move but I am afraid that I won’t get my security deposit back and will not have anywhere else to go. I’m not sure what to do and I’m very affraid for my children and myself.

Questions:

What are my rights when it comes to having mold in your aparment?

Alexia in Washington, DC

Hello,  my daughters and I have been having unusual symptoms for about one year now. I found mold in my home and I’ve even showed it to my primary care physician; I bought a “Do It Yourself Mold Test” from Home Depot. The results came back positive for mold.

Unfortunately, my doctor couldn’t give me any help. I recieve medicaid, and researching this topic I see that it is very deadly. My doctor told me that mold is a higly legal issue and that he could not help me with the issue. I don’t know what else to do. I can not afford to get tests done and I can’t seem to find a doctor that will accept my insurance. I need resources if anyone one knows how to help please let me know.

Virginia in Hendersonville, N.C.

My home is in a condominium complex of 22 units, my unit is a ground floor unit which has had large amounts of moisture in the basement to the point of causing buckling of the oak flooring in the living room area. Large splotches of black mold have appeared on the walls and interior divider of basement, which is caused by a blocked drainage pipe from the gutter downspout.

This HOA is governed by a board of 5 individuals who choose to spend the HOA money on themselves (their own buildings and grounds) and have seriously neglected this condition in my basement which affects my home. Now I’ve learned that a “cleanup” which was completed last September was only a partial cleanup, which was the cheapest way out.

Now I learn there is black mold in the crawl space of which there has been knowledge by at least one or more board members for 3 years, I have hired a personal injury attorney to sue for remediation of all mold and damages to re-imburse for health issues including COPD, nosebleeds, and extreme fatigue. I will keep you advised.

Questions:

Could this case be based on intentional and malicious neglect? There are other issues here at my condo association which have illustrated a complete disregard to any unit owner not within “the charmed circle” who suffer other abuse, including discrimination, favoritism, neglect of buildings and grounds, etc. is there any legal remedy for such actions as this?

These are to name a few.

Our cats were showing their own signs of ex-poser from the mold too.

We were too loud.

Finally finding a trailer with no mold…No really, no mold!!!

I miss her.

October 2009, following her was her cousin Paul dying from pneumonia. Now the only support and witness I have left to the inside world of our moldy life is my feisty elderly great aunt Anita; Paul’s mom, and my mothers aunt who’s cared for Paul his whole life. I love her.

We were ready to do some catching up with trying to reboot her development, after all she’d been ill and in severe pain for so long.

April 2011 here we stand stuck in hotels again.

My husband is now 41 years old and wasn’t in the house as long as us; so he’s not so bad off. However, he was the first to get ill, so something got a hold of him.

Still hoping that for what ever reason we’re going through this; lets us move on with life.

Now, because we’re living outside the materialistic world, with no assistance and are working poor. People stare at us, wondering our situation, to scared or are not yet evolved to understand why we’re living the way we are, and are clueless about (S.B.S) let alone biotoxin poisoning.

As soon as I noticed there’s black mold, and you can clearly see it; is about the same time I start to have a reaction. I start trembling (shaking), so I go to the manager he tells me their aware of it, but do not think it is as bad as it is.

Now today Tuesday September 6, 2011. Alixandrea’s sick once again from black mold.

Questions:

How can we protect ourselves from re-exposure?

How can I undo the damage to my children, what kind of treatment do we need?

What kind of doctors do we need? What is the best way to cleanse my 4 year-old who doesn’t trust me? Thanks to antibiotics.

Most of the doctors we see don’t believe us and wont treat us.

What else do I need to proceed with a lawsuit?

What do I need to be watching out for as far as mold is concerned?

Brenda in Rochester, Massachusetts

My husband and I separated in June 2010. My house is in a short sale and he left me and my 2 asthmatic children in a house full of toxic mold. The doctors and insurance said get out as soon as possible because we are now getting sicker and I tried for help calling housing. They sent us in circles and as time goes on its getting worse. The house is filled with mold – it has to be professionally bleached and maybe condemned.

Questions:

I need housing fast where do I go with my children? Any suggestions?

Lakeisha in Greenbelt, Maryland

I am a resident of a county funded housing program. I have been living in Franklin park apartments (location of program) since november ’10. Since moving in we have made numerous requests for apartment maintenance. The issue finally became unbearable when about four months ago, we noticed the bathroom ceiling leaking(around the ventilation fan).

After numerous calls to both the maintenance workers of the program and complex, they came and went to fix the leak in the upstairs apartment. At this time I explained to the workers that not only was the ceiling cracking but it was buckling in the middle and that everyday it seems like new mold is popping up along the cracks. However it must not have been important enough cuz nothing was down.

Now I have 4 small kids that have all fallen ill from continuous breathing in of mold spores(dr. Confirmed). This is frustrating because I don’t know what to do or who to contact. I have been given the run around time and time again. These people and their lack of concern are putting my babies (the oldest is 4, the youngest is 6mos.) at risk for serious long lasting breathing issues, and I’m mad.

Questions:

What can I do, we’ve tried high concentrated bleach solutions but to no avail?

Lynn in Missouri

I moved into an apartment in May 2010. I have heard from numerous people that my apartment was condemned due to black mold. Since I have moved in I have had several severe asthma attacks and a few small controllable ones. My children haven’t really had any asthma attacks, but have had many different sicknesses. My youngest son who just turned 3 years old in June had slept completely through the night since he was a few weeks old. But he had been waking up with a chronic cough from September 2010, and the doctor I had spoken with believed that it was his asthma. So I tried to keep it under control. He had to use his inhaler 4 times that week. He had woken up every night since due to his cough, at least 4 times a night. Going to bed at 9 waking up at 11 130 4 up until 530 and then down until 8 was very hard on the little guy.

In late May ’11 early June ’11 he had seen four doctors, two urgent care physicians, his pediatrician, and an ENT specialist. All of them suggested more so demanded that he have a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy because they were so enlarged. Just to let you know this little boy had not had more than one case of strep at most that I know of EVER! Now my fiance and I can not sleep in our room because it is so dry and unbearable, our throats hurt, I have had two bloody noses, wake up with extreme migraines, stopped up nose, and horrible cough.

Questions:

I would like to know if my sons surgery could have been caused because of the mold? Could my families illnesses be caused because of the mold?

Kathy in Portage, Indiana

I live on the first floor of a row of 2-story apartments. Whenever anyone in my immediate area runs their air conditioner, water gushes down into my utility room and out a drain on the floor of the room. However, I see globs of something near the drain and some water still remaining on the floor that does not make it down the drain. I have had bad headaches, unusual fatigue and sinus problems lately that are not a problem when I leave home and am in another environment. Could this be a mold problem?

Ruth in North Haven, Connecticut

I moved into senior housing eight years ago. I noticed that I frequently get big chunks of black stuff which I believe is mold in my shower head and floating in my toilet. I complained to management and they brought someone to my apartment who they said was a plumber. He said it was because frequently they didn’t treat the water properly at the reservoir. I have lived in this town for 35 years in various places and never had this problem. I am trapped here due to finances and just clean frequently with bleach and then it lets up for awhile. Sometimes when I shower my eyes itch and burn. I have noticed that I am more short of breath lately.

Questions:

Can their explanation of my mold problem be true? How do I correct this problem?

Andrew in Houston, Texas

I first discovered mold on 7/18/2011 the first day we moved into our new apt. We had the lease signed for two weeks but did not have the money for electricity yet. I knew it was mold because my grandmothers house has been remodeled because of mold, also my mothers house after a major flood here in Houston.

I got some bleach out and a brillo pad and scrubbed down all the vents with bleach, thinking it was just a mixture of mold and dust as the building is old. On 7/19 I found a mold circle along the left hand wall in the carpet, about a foot long, this is also the wall that is directly leading to the outside and parking lot. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but a week and a half after fully moving in, my girlfriend and I began to start feeling sick.

As we had just moved into a new place, we figured, new germs and environment maybe that caused it. A few days passed we went to stay the evening with a family member and felt overall better, no heat flashes, no congestion, no headaches, no joint aches, no sore throats, we figured we were getting better.

We returned to the apt and this is at the two week point of our residency, we stayed feeling better for a few days, then gradually the symptoms of mold exposure all started too come back. I didn’t know at the time that every symptom I had was a symptom of mold exposure, as it just seemed like a bad virus or the flu. I went and got an Ionic pro air filtration unit at this point, and our symptoms were less taxing on our bodies. I ran the ionic pro for a week and a half straight, at which point I turned the machine off so it wouldn’t run to hot and burn its circuits out.

I forgot to plug the unit back in for a total of 3 days, in which point my girlfriend and I became devastatingly ill. We went through complete loss of appetite, nausea when we would try and force food down, started coughing up mucus with signs of black spotting, we are smokers, but we only smoke about five cigarettes a day.

I began noticing breakouts on my leg which I chocked up to an acne out break from being sick. My eye’s started to water, at completely random times, we went through heat flashes where we would have to stand in front of the fan or pass out. On 8/15 it reached a breaking point though, I experienced the first signs of dizziness. I left my apt to walk to a Mexican restaurant to get to go food. In the 45 minutes I was waiting for our meals to be prepared, my dizziness and “cloudy head” ( I had trouble phrasing things and ordering.) slowly began to disappear. By the time I came home I felt like I could eat a full meal again, I came inside and we sat down too eat.

My girlfriend could only stomach two bites of her chicken tenders and said if she ate anymore she would throw up. This is after eating half a normal dinner portion the previous night because of the same thing. At that point she started describing the way she felt and brought up the mold I found when we moved in. I decided it was imperative to check the vents which I had previously scrubbed. Low and behold the mold had come back triple fold and was now spreading from inside of the vent to the outside grates. At this point I looked up the symptoms and found enough similarities to demand an air test from my front office.

I immediately stopped eating my meal and walked to my front office very frustrated. Told him what was going on asked him if they tested their units for mold before new tenants came in, and asked him to get me a copy of the last test results for mold in that unit. Then asked him to send someone to test my unit for mold, he said that he would get some one out hopefully by the end of the day to test, but there were two ac units out on the complex and those had priority.

I returned to my apt to take pictures of all the mold spots before maintenance could come clean it up. Then returned to the office to show the pictures of the mold to the person I was speaking with. At 6:00 P.M. we left the apartment for good, after maintenance got off for the day. No one showed up, of course, to test.

I called them at 10:00 A.M. on 8/16/2011 and reached someone, I asked if she knew when maintenance would be in to test the air in my apt to which she replied, we are not doing a test we are just cleaning the vents in your apartment. I asked her why she would do that, when I specifically asked for a test. I reiterated the fact I wanted a mold test done to see if I was being forced to breathe toxic mold in my apartment. At which point she refused a test, I then asked her to cancel the cleaning so I could have the apt independently tested to which she replied our management group does not let us cancel work orders.

I asked then if she would document in my file, that I was told I would receive a mold test the previous day, and I was now being told by her that they would not test my apartment for mold, if I asked them to in regards to my family’s safety. She told me she would make a statement when a claim was filed and a statement was needed from her. I decided to call the state board of health, which gave me many numbers to call for legal recourse.

Questions:

What can I do against my apartment company? Why won’t they test for me if I ask them to, are they in violation any laws or my rights? I have no idea of anything to do really this is my first place… Please check the photos and tell me if you think it may be mold exposure. Sorry for the quality I don’t have much money and am just working with a webcam.

I have a female friend. She’s around 36 years old. She lives in an apartment complex that has a significant amount of mold problems. Around six months ago I noticed circles on her neck. I looked real close and they were what appeared to be ring worm. I saw her the other day and she lifted her pants and shirt. These rings of rash are all over and I mean all over. Looks like hundreds of them that just cover her. Naturally I am washing to prevent exposure. I have suggested that it could be ring worm and to use Lotromin. I have not seen any pictures where this fungus covers the whole body. I’m not entirely convinced it is ring worm due to the mold in her apartment. She has been living with the mold for atleast four months but I bet it has been going on longer. She called the housing authority and they gave the complex a month to clean it up. Nothing has been done.

Questions:

If this is ring worm can it become systemic.? There are so many rings. Would/could mold cause similar symptoms as ring worm? I do not no if it itches or if there is pain.

Vicki in Haslett, Michigan

I have to share my story of not just BLACK MOLD, but also the GREEN AND YELLOWISH mold that we can’t see. I recently moved into an apartment and the first day I was moving in I had questions about the smell of mildew and the mold on the windows and wall, the answer I was given “just bleach it”!

Within a month I had my first trip to the ER. I awoke one morning to the right side of my face swollen to the point it was closing my eye, at the ER we were completed as to the cause and the Dr. thought a tooth infection maybe, but I had no to pain and no apparent tooth breakage.

I was diagnosed with facial cellulitis and hospitalized. I returned home again. The sickness started, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, unable to even sit up at times, I didn’t know what was happening and fear was beginning to set in.

Then 3 months after living there I went into convulsions and my daughter had to call 911, my blood tests revealed that I had severe blood poison and at that time diagnosed as “SEPTIS” otherwise known as “SEPTIC SHOCK SYNDROME” but still I didn’t put it together and underwent many, many, tests trying to figure out what was killing me.

After about 10 days I was again well enough to go home. I had holes all over my skin, arms, face, legs and feet and was starting to think that I was never going to get better. My heart rate and BP would fall to the point that I feared going to sleep and I didn’t have to strength to even go back to ER. Finally after fearing that death was near I did return to ER. While waiting in the waiting room my heart rate excel orated to the point that a Police Officer noticed that I was in distress and immediately got me back.

I am thankful that the ER Dr. that day was a take charge Dr. because she just sprang into action and was doing any and every test known. Again I was admitted into ICU and Isolation and seen by an INFECTIOUS DIASESE specialist who did biopsies of my skin in different areas, concluding that I had a severe bacterial infection throughout my entire body and that is when we started reviewing my environment and issues there. We finally concluded with home tests and inspections that I was slowly dying from TOXIC MOLD INFESTATION exacerbated when I got bit by a BOT FLY creating and open wound for the mold to get into and nearly kill me.

I now have an access port in my chest because I lost 23 lbs. my veins collapsed due to dehydration and malnutrition. As if this isn’t enough my daughter and her roommate live in the same complex but different building and have been there longer and have had the same illnesses and issues, they were both 21 very healthy ladies, but also completed by their illnesses.

My daughter’s roommate has been going to the DR. concerning her health issues and the swelling in her neck making swallowing difficult, she was able to tell her Dr. about the mold issues and give him the report we had done….she is now at 21 being faced with LYMPHNOID CANCER due to long term exposure of these toxic molds.

My daughter is also going through many tests also now that she was able to tell her Dr. of the findings after going to the Dr. many, many, times and being placed on multiple antibiotics for breathing issues, sinus infections, fatigue, muscle pain and weakness and kidney problems. Please be vigilant and if you have any suspicion that you have an issue with mold get the tests done it is better to know sooner than latter! I am attaching pictures of what my skin looked like from my experience with mold! They are a bit grafic so prepare. But these are just a few there are many more.
